Elizabeth, New Jersey is at an exciting crossroads presenting opportunities to advance and celebrate the history and potential within the community. The masterplan for the city will reinvigorate economically depressed areas with a generative landscape infrastructure that stitches together ecological, industrial, residential, and commercial communities while allowing for ecological and urban flux. An intervention comprised of thoughtfully planned and placed urban wild strategies will enhance the quality of life for current inhabitants and address their needs through community awareness and supportive programs. The masterplan considers existing stresses across the city that are affecting poverty levels and property abandonment in concentrated areas. These conditions combined with elevated flood levels projected to dramatically increase over the next 100 years requires drastic implementation of new zoning to rethink the way nature and urbanity coexist. Though the strategy is drastic, the timeline and plan for transition remains sensitive to the existing communities and provides a timeline that will effectively and efficiently protect and enhance the lives of the inhabitants in Elizabeth. Infusing the landscape with accessible transportation and engaging walkable paths to encourage interaction with the existing community will create opportunities for fellowship and celebration of the past, present, and future cultural and economic prosperity. By introducing engaging circulation that improves the ease of access to open green space, a greater sense of community will be established. Well placed nodes of program will provide employment and training opportunities for residents to boost economy and enhance . The river and railways provide seams that will stitch together programmatic anchors of community orientated program to heighten awareness of the present needs and assets available to all within the Elizabeth municipality.
