Bird Watching Stand Turkey Creek, Mississippi
|
Adaptation is critical for the survival of a species. The survival of many species of birds in the Turkey Creek area of Mississippi has been threatened due to ecological and social devastation through the years. Helping citizens become aware of the importance of the creek is key to the survival of this historically and ecologically profound landmark. Here proposed is a solution that will bring together the community, allowing man to adapt to the natural setting of the creek in order to view migrant birds as they adapt to the ecology of the site. Flight is an essential quality for a bird's survival and adaptation; therefore this aspect serves to define the gestural qualities of the form and mechanics of the stand. The sculptural wings provide both covering and platform, in response to the needs of the user. Each sculptural member can manually be adjusted to extend out into the water for better viewing of the creek or remain vertically oriented for maximum coverage and unity of form. The secondary platforms (or fins) extend on a track system hidden beneath the top layer of the main platform. The fins are segmented into one- foot sections that are held together by a hinge system. As the user pushes on the top end of the fin, it catches onto the track and extends to meet its respective post out on the water. These posts as well as the ones that support the main platform are the only members that engage the earth. Because of this they are made of wood due to its environmentally friendly qualities. The other material used is steel, which makes up the fins and the track system. It is used because of its strength and durability.
